Work Ready For teachers and careers leads

Problem solving your students will actually finish

Eight short workplace scenarios for Years 10 to 13 and college. About eight minutes each, on any device, no login, and nothing collected about the student.

The gap this is for

Employers keep saying the same thing. School and college leavers can do the task. They freeze when the task goes wrong.

Most provision aimed at this is either a teacher-led lesson pack that needs an hour and a room, or a whole-school subscription with a platform behind it. There is very little that a student can open on their phone, finish before the bus, and come out of having actually decided something.

What a module is

One workplace situation, going wrong in an ordinary way. A rota clash on a Saturday shift. An order that will not arrive in time.

  1. Name the problem. Which of these is the actual problem, and which are just annoying?
  2. Weigh the options. Three realistic choices. None of them is clean.
  3. Live with the consequence. What happened, and what a manager would have done.
  4. Reflection log. Three questions, kept by the student, printable.

There is no single right answer and no score for guessing what we want to hear. The point is that they choose, tell someone, and can say why. That last question is the one they will be asked at interview.

Try them

Both of these are the finished thing, free, and open to anyone. Go through one as a student would.

The full set

  1. The double-booked shift (live, free)
  2. The Halbrook order (live, free)
  3. The customer who is only partly wrong
  4. The delivery is late and you have to decide who to tell first
  5. The kit fails mid-shift and there is no manager on site
  6. Two supervisors, two different instructions
  7. A task nobody trained you for
  8. Something has gone wrong and it was your fault

How you would run it

Set against Gatsby Benchmarks 1, 4 and 6. Deliberately not tied to a framework that would make it something you have to administer.

The two modules above stay free. If you would find the full set useful, leave your details and I will tell you when the rest are ready, and what it costs. No newsletter, and I will not pass your details to anyone.

Your school or college address is fine.
